IRM - Institute of Risk Management is risk management’s professional education body. The Institute is governed by practising risk professionals and has strong links to leading universities worldwide. Recognising that risk management is multi-disciplinary; IRM works closely with many other specialists institutes and seek to represent a broad and diverse set of stakeholders. Members have backgrounds in many different risk-related disciplines: brokers, project managers, insurers, surveyors, lawyers, auditors, health and safety professionals and engineers are among those represented.
Steve FOWLER, Chief Executive Officer, The Institute of Risk Management Steve was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Risk Management in April 2002. After graduating in chemistry from Oxford University , Steve joined Sun Alliance as a risk engineer. Ten years later, Steve set up the business systems function: in this role he introduced business project management and one of the European insurance industry’s first web-based trading systems. Promotion to Commercial IT Director for Royal & SunAlliance followed, where Steve led the creation of an integrated business-led approach to IT. In recent years, Steve has been involved with a range of business and technology project and programme change assignments culminating in joining the IRM as CEO. Steve is a Fellow of the IRM, a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. Steve also chairs the education panel of the International Federation of Risk and Insurance Associations.
Nicola CRAWFORD is a risk based strategist with over 15 years experience in risk and strategic management, corporate governance and compliance, nationally and internationally; public and private sector. Nicola is known for her a practical ability to move between strategic and operational contexts – to place key business issues on the boardroom table or provide training at the business coalface. These skills are exhibited through experience in Base II, Credit Risk reviews, governance reviews, strategic risk profiling, lecturing in ecommerce, facilitation services, establishing and implementing enterprise risk and compliance frameworks, operational risk reviews and business continuity planning. Nicola is active participant in the development of the Risk Management profession, having planned and delivered innovative risk and security conferences. This is evidenced by numerous invitations to address International Risk Management and Business Continuity seminars. She is a Certified Practicing Risk Manager (CPRM) and was educated in South Africa and the UK, obtained a degree at Victoria University Wellington, New Zealand. Nicola has a professional standing with the UK Institute of Risk Management and the Risk Management Institute of Australasia, the Australian Compliance Institute, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, ISACA, Australian Securities Institute. Nicola’s Specialties include the ability to synthesize data with a plethora of experience and knowledge to provide informed input into strategy and risk based decision-making. She is committed to ongoing learning and research in her area of expertise, linking this research to a more forward oriented view of Resiliency practices that take account of multidisciplinary perspectives. Comprehensive research and analytical skills in banking and finance, health, utilities and public sector risks and opportunities.
